Unleash Your Design Potential
Learn CSS in Squarespace
Hey friends,
I originally built this course 5 (!!) years ago. The fundamentals of CSS haven't changed much, but Squarespace has, so I'm revamping the whole curriculum.

Hey there! 👋
My name is Will. I’ve been working in Squarespace for years and have become an expert in customizing elements within Squarespace through code.
I started learning CSS because clients kept asking for customizations that Squarespace couldn't handle on its own. Over time I learned how to modify components while staying within Squarespace's structure, so the changes hold up and stay maintainable instead of breaking down the line.
Today, code that I have written and shared is used on over 50,000 Squarespace websites, and my articles and video tutorials have helped thousands of people to build great websites.
This course is an effort to help motivated individuals build deeper knowledge on the platform they love, while building skills that are transferable across the web design industry.
Keep Building,
Will
Lessons
Here's my current curriculum. The new version will build on this foundation.
1. How Websites Work - Meet the three coding languages behind every website — plus a way to visually understand how code fits together.
2. Understanding HTML - You can't learn CSS without HTML. We cover how to write it, what a div actually is, and how to create custom elements.
3. The Web Inspector - Your most powerful tool in web design. How to open it, how to read it, and which parts actually matter.
4. Understanding CSS - Now the real thing. We cover CSS syntax and every place you can add code in Squarespace.
5. Targeting Elements - Targeting elements in Squarespace can feel frustrating and complex. Here's how to target anything on your site.
6. CSS Combinators - When targeting is too broad, you end up changing things you didn't mean to. Combinators let you get specific and hit exactly the right element.
7. Formatting, Part 1 - Text styles, hover effects, background colors. We cover the most-used CSS properties — and how to change them on hover.
8. Layout, Part 1 - Layout confuses even advanced designers. I make properties like display and position simple, then apply them to Squarespace so you can customize summary blocks in ways you didn't know were possible.
9. CSS Overrides - Everything comes together. Learn to adjust any element — on your Squarespace site or any other website, on any platform — with a deeper dive into the Web Inspector. This is the "ah-ha" lesson.
10. Media Queries - Most visitors are on mobile, so most sites should be built mobile-first. Media queries let you write CSS that applies only on mobile, giving you full control of the mobile experience.
11. Colors in CSS - The different color formats (and the one you should actually use), best practices for borders and box-shadows, then CSS variables and how I manage colors in the custom CSS area.
